Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) - Puyurru
Biography
Evelyn Robertson was born in 1986 and grew up in the community of Yuendumu, 250 km north-west of Alice Springs. She is the daughter of artist Tina Martin Robertson Napangardi and the granddaughter of Shorty Robertson Jangala, whose childhood memories of the Coniston Aboriginal massacre and the Wantaparri shootings left their mark on her.
In 2005, Evelyn Robertson moved to Nyirripi with her family. She is married to Kenneth Martin Jungarrayi and has a son from a previous relationship. Evelyn Robertson began painting at the art centre in 2007, mainly the stories (Jukurrpa) of her grandfather, but also those of her father and grandmother, dreams that relate directly to her land, its characteristics and the plants and animals that inhabit it. Like most Aboriginal painters, Evelyn Robertson evokes stories from the Dreamtime, during which mythical beings (the Lightning Men, the Rainbow Python, the yam, etc.) created Australia and founded the moral, religious and spiritual laws that still govern Aboriginal culture today.
