Biography

Lucy Yukenbarri is an Aboriginal artist from Balgo Hills in the Kimberley region. She began painting in 1989. Lucy's early work embodies the style of the Balgo School, which developed in the 1980s. It is a pointillist style of painting, vivid in colour, which illustrates mythological stories, Dreams and sacred sites.

Lucy Yukenbarri's painting style has evolved over time, and she offers a highly original interpretation of the motifs and techniques inherited from ritual painting on the ground. The artist offers a new interpretation of traditional Aboriginal pointillism, her dots thickening and narrowing until they become flat areas of vivid colour. These thick lines stand out against a background of warm, telluric colours, evoking the earth of the dunes and hills of Balgo, whose shape and layout are also reminiscent of the body paintings that the Aborigines create during the ceremonies in which they celebrate the mysteries of the Dreamtime. In this painting, the artist presents a satellite vision of a sacred site, the secrets of which have been passed down for generations.
