Manini Gumana hails from Yirrkala in Arnhem Land. Her father was a much-loved leader. She is the wife of Garwan Wanambi, an artist based in Yirrkala.
has developed a unique approach to bark painting that embodies the innovative approach to art among Yirrkala's younger generation of artists. The particularity of the artists at this art centre is to reproduce motifs that combine subjects treated realistically with geometric patterns of clan and ritual value that they call dhulang. Their function is to sacralise the support and the forms reproduced on the trunks while symbolising the vital force that emanates from them.
