Evelyn Pultara, from the Utopia community in the Northern Territory, began painting in 1997. She initially focused on more traditional motifs such as bush berries and awelye. Today she paints almost exclusively bush yam, which is an essential food for the people of the desert, who regard it as a ‘dream’. Like Emily Kame, here Evelyn Pultara illustrates the abundance of food and colour that spring brings, a symbol of renewal. This landscape can be read like a map of the sky, as Aboriginal art readily blends all planes - terrestrial and celestial - all times and all places, in a synthetic perspective. This practice gives the works an eminently dreamlike dimension.
