Abie Loy is part of the new generation of artists in the Utopia community. She began painting in 1994 on the advice of her grandmother, the famous Kathleen Petyarre. Her work is inspired by the ‘dreams’ of which she is the ritual guardian: in particular that of the Bush Leaf, of which this painting is a celebration. There is both centrifugal and centripetal movement in this astonishing composition, which seems to move before our very eyes. The plant that grows in the summer is a symbol of fertility in a region with a climate that is usually arid, and to devote a painting to it is both to bear witness to the reality of this fertility and to guarantee it for the future, since through his painting, the artist is performing a religious act that, by commemorating the Edenic Dreamtime when this plant was created, ensures its permanence and guarantees future fertility.
