This painting from Ronnie Tjampitjimpa refers to an island in Lake Mackay, a saltwater lake in the middle of Australia. At its center, it depicts this island seen from above.

The red area, bordered by a white circle, evokes a sacred object used in magical rituals. It depicts an important place in the mythology of the Tingari Cycle. Tingari men gathered here to celebrate sacred rituals. The themes of these rituals remain secret to this day.

The Tingari, a group of mythical characters, moved across the Australian continent during the Time of Creation, shaping some very special sites.

Tingari men are usually followed by their wives and accompanied by young novices. Their movements are described in numerous songs still used today for initiation.

Here, the traditional technique of pointillism is revisited and modified, with the various dots linked together, giving the whole a surprisingly modern character.
