Ghost III explores the formal qualities of painting while incorporating the imagery of flags and the visual language of warfare—particularly the concept of allegiance. At the site of the 1854 Eureka Riot, the Southern Cross flag was raised as a rallying point, symbolizing the miners' unity in their struggle against British colonial rule.

The flag hoisted over Bakery Hill, a site of resistance, was later cut into pieces and distributed among the crowd as a token of remembrance. It has since been reassembled and is now displayed at the Eureka Museum in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
