Daisy Frank Napangardi belongs to one of Australia's best-known central desert art communities, Yuendumu, where contemporary Aboriginal painting emerged in the 1970s alongside Papunya. Here, the artist celebrates a particular Dreaming (Jukurrpa) linked to the women (Karnta), who in the Dreamtime went to pick sweet berries on a site that has become sacred and can be seen in the centre of the canvas. The women are represented by the ‘U’ shapes, with the ‘I’ and ‘0’ symbolising their digging sticks and harvesting baskets respectively. This work, a veritable cartography of the desert, evokes not only harvesting episodes but also ceremonial dances.
