This ceremonial plaque from the Wadeye region was one of the first works acquired by the ethnologist, lecturer, writer and film-maker Jacques Villeminot, who has devoted part of his life to the Australian Aborigines. He began collecting Aboriginal objects in the mid-1950s.

The symbolic motifs characteristic of the iconography of desert art, with its concentric circles and sinuous lines, mean that this plaque can be associated with the period from the 1950s to the 1960s.
