The most original artistic expression of Tiwi art is funerary poles. These posts can be of varying size and symbolize various entities. There are sculptures representing human figures, animals (seabirds) or abstract.

Here, the work represents a stylized human face by wood cutting and painting. It could be an ancestor deceased. This totemic figure features a painted decor of concentric circles and points made using natural pigments such as ocher, kaolin and coal. Above the bust, there is a rope of vegetable fibers on which are hung bird feathers, reinforcing the sacredness of the object.

This work of the first half of the twentieth century is part of an artistic tradition and testifies by its particular motifs of clan membership to which this artist Tiwi belongs.
