Alongside the contemporary works of art (paintings and sculptures) that have made Aboriginal culture famous, there continues to exist a whole range of high-quality crafts: between art and popular tradition, the value of which lies in the common religious substratum whose spirit permeates all aspects of daily life and places them under the sign of the sacred. Boomerangs, spears, painted wooden trays and agricultural implements such as digging sticks are all made to serve a utilitarian purpose, but they are also finely decorated and, in all cases, bear motifs and symbols that reflect the deepest beliefs of the artists and craftsmen who made them. As the Aborigines did not work with metal until the arrival of the first Anglo-Saxon settlers in the 18th century, most of these objects are still made from wood, in keeping with tradition.
