Jorna Newberry is a painter from the Pitjantjatjara language group, born in 1959 in Angus Downs. She lives between Alice Springs, where her family still resides, and Warakurna: she links her indigenous cultural heritage with modern culture. Here she paints the land of Irrunytju, in the Western Desert. She also depicts the Walpa Tjukurpa - the Dream of the Wind, which refers to her mother's homeland, Utantja, which is a large expanse of sacred land with hills and a rocky hollow where Aborigines used to gather for painting, dancing and ceremonies.
Jorna's paintings are distinguished by their subtle palette of white, red with accents of yellow, honey and caramel, which contrast very effectively with the austerity of the black or grey background. The paintings are also remarkable for their meticulous execution.
