Originally from Kintore in the Great Central Desert, Pantjiya Nungurrayi is a contemporary of early modern aboriginal art born in Papunya in the 1970s.

Pantjiya celebrates here the sacred site of Kungkiyunti (Browns Bore, in English) west of Haasts Bluff. Legend has it that at the time of the creation of the world, a group of women from the artist’s clan, suffering terribly from the cold,  had come to this site to die.

The concentric circles represent both the water holes of the site and the curved backs of the women fighting against the cold. As for the colors, they evoke the red of wild tomatoes that the women fed on during their journey.
