Frank Ward Tjupurrula was a Papunya artist. Here he celebrates the splendour of his sacred territory through labyrinthine forms presented in the form of a ‘satellite vision’. The memory of the Tingari men, the artist's ancestors, is evoked here. The Tingari men are mythical figures who travelled vast areas of the country performing rituals and creating and shaping special sites. The Tingari men were generally followed by Tingari women and accompanied by novices. The interlocking shapes across the canvas are a powerful symbol of the labyrinthine paths they took. The journeys and adventures of the Tingari are recounted in a number of song cycles. These ancestral tales form part of the teaching given to young people today after their initiation, and explain contemporary customs.
