Contrary to what we might think, although they were semi-nomadic, the aboriginal peoples were not content to move around in search of food; they planted seeds themselves to facilitate the growth of edible plants.
With this painting, Elizabeth Kunoth transcribes the sowing of the earth when the women throw the seeds of a local species of yam into the wind to ensure their subsistence in the dry season. The thousands of dotted lines in different colours, meticulously applied, symbolise the movement of the seeds as they are pushed by the wind and glisten in the sunlight.
