Contrary to what we might think, although they were semi-nomadic, the aboriginal peoples were not content to move around in search of food; they planted seeds themselves to facilitate the growth of edible plants.
In this painting, Elizabeth Kunoth depicts the seeding of the earth as the women cast the seeds of a local species of yam into the wind, enabling them to survive the dry season. The thousands of dotted lines in different colours, meticulously applied, symbolise the movement of the seeds as they are pushed by the wind and glisten in the sunlight.
