Native to the western part of Arnhem Land (north coast of Australia), the artist has made with this spirit Yawkyawk wood a typical work of art of this maritime region rich in trees of various species whose Aborigines use bark and wood for their paintings and sculptures. The Yawkyawk - or "young woman spirit" - belongs to the group of Mimih spirits protecting the coasts of Arnhem Land: on the wall of the caves in this region, there are painted representations dating back nearly 20,000 years.
