Originally from Papunya in the heart of the Australian desert, Elizabeth Marks Nakamarra belongs to "The" community where contemporary Aboriginal painting was born in 1970 under the influence of the Anglo-Saxon schoolteacher Geoffrey Bardon. Initially a matter for men, painting was quickly also practiced by women. As in many desert communities which brought together populations far from their traditional clan territories, the artists making up that of Papunya belonged to different ethnic groups who, while sharing a common cultural and religious background, also had their own legends, their sensitivity and their own ways of celebrating Dreamtime. Hence the diversity of styles practiced.
