Biography

Emily Kame Kngwarreye is from Utopia, north-east of Alice Springs. She started painting at the age of 80, first working on the art of batik, the first medium used in Utopia. She then focuses on painting on canvas. Her extremely energetic work has allowed her to become the most famous and highly rated Aboriginal artist. Emily died in 1996. As a posthumous tribute, Emily was chosen to represent Australia at the 1997 Venice Biennale. The Australian National Museums are also presenting a major retrospective of his work this year.
