Biography

Grace Butcher Napangardi, also known as Florrie Jones Napangardi, was born in 1967 in Yuendumu, a remote community 290 km north-west of Alice Springs in Australia's Northern Territory. When she was young, Grace Butcher Napangardi moved to Alice Springs with her family, where she studied English. She wanted to learn more, to read and write.  Grace Butcher Napangardi started painting at the art centre in 1987, but it wasn't until 2008, when she moved back to Yuendumu to be near her family, that she began painting full time. Her sister Mary Butcher Napangardi and her aunt Daisy Nelson Napanangka (1930 - 2001) are well-known artists and together they often painted on the same canvases.  Grace Butcher Napangardi paints her stories of Pikilyi Jukurrpa - Pikilyi is a sacred watering hole that never dries up. These Dreams represent the territory and describe journeys through the country, its characteristics and the plants and animals that inhabit it. These stories were passed on to her by her father and have been passed down for thousands of years.
