Biography

Helen Kennedy is an artist born in 1967 in Melbourne, Victoria. Between 1986 and 1988, the artist completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in engraving at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. Since the 1990s, Helen Kennedy's engraved works have been exhibited in Australia, Germany, and also in Japan. From 1997, she turned to oil painting. The artist assures that his work goes beyond a reproduction of atmospheric effects, ringing the possibility of being able to represent a more spiritual domain.

A trip to Europe precipitated a visual and creative metamorphosis of his work. Until then, she focused on engraving, manipulating copper plates using raw biting techniques, scraping, etc. to obtain a texture effect. For painting, Helen Kennedy approaches the canvas as freely, erasing or spreading the paint, sometimes leaving bare surfaces to bring out the primed canvas.

The artist makes the perception of space difficult, the gaze moves from light to dark areas, unable to decipher whether the blurred edges or sudden flashes of light represent land, sea, sky or something less palpable. Helen Kennedy's main desire is to recreate the perceived sensations of a place rather than describing its physical attributes.

Some of his works are today kept in Australian museums such as the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, etc.
