Mimih Spirit
Mimih Spirit
Moses Wurrkidja comes from Maningrida, a community 300 km east of Darwin on the Liverpool River estuary, and belongs to the Kuninjku clan.
He represents the Mimih spirits who protect the coastline, and representations of them can be found on cave walls dating back almost 20,000 years. Reputed to inhabit the crevices of the coast, the Mimih spirits are characterised by a slenderness that borders on fragility: according to tradition, a gust of wind that is a little too strong can break their bones, and the sculpture's slender forms reflect this characteristic, which is further emphasised by the curvature of the trunk used by the artist.
