Pantjiya Nungurrayi is from Kintore, not far from the Papunya Aboriginal community in the Great Central Desert. She is contemporary with the beginnings of modern Aboriginal art in Papunya in the 1970s, when, under the guidance of the Anglo-Saxon teacher Geoffrey Bardon, teenagers from this community began to reproduce on the walls of their school the ritual paintings made by the initiates of their clan.
