Biography
Patsy Mudgedell was born in 1960 in Ruby Plains Station, a community about 40 kilometres from Halls Creek in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. She moved as a child to Balgo Hills with her family and still resides there. Patsy Mudgedell came from a large family of painters. Her mother, Mati Mudgedell, and her siblings Brian and Marie are successful artists themselves. Patsy Mudgedell is inspired by her mother's style, but always evolves it. Her paintings are never the same, she is always changing the tones and shapes. She learned different graphic techniques while studying art at the Bachelor Institute, Perth. This artistic education allows her to translate her themes in different and original ways. The Balgo Aboriginal community art movement developed rapidly in the early 1980s, following the model of the movement initiated by the Papunya community. In keeping with the characteristic Balgo style, Patsy Mudgedell uses bright colours to paint abstract landscapes from the sky.
