Biography

Born in Central Arnhem Land (northern coast of Australia), Paul Nabulumo Namarinjmak belongs to the important artistic community of Maningrida. This trading post founded in 1949 gradually became a center for the production of objects (rugs, baskets) made from plant fibers and, in 1963, the Aborigines (or Yolngu as they call themselves – the word means "Men" in dialect of the region) who lived there formed a cooperative to offer, in addition to these objects, the sculptures and paintings on bark which have made this community famous today.

Today, this brings together nearly 300 artists who draw their inspiration from the religious tradition of this region populated by Great Ancestors: various "spirits" - beneficial or threatening - such as the Maam, the Mimi or the Yawkyawk mermaid, animals ( for example the Kangaroo or the Rainbow Python) or even totemic plants (like the yam with its nourishing tubers).
