Originally from Utopia, north-east of Alice Springs, Aboriginal painter Lilly Sandover Kngwarreye belongs to the group of Anmatyere women artists who became famous from the 1970s onwards for their production of batik - the printing of pictorial motifs on silk. She herself first distinguished herself in this practice before reproducing on canvas the Dreamtime themes of which she was the repository. In this painting she depicts, from the air, a dune landscape in the Utopia region that is said to have been created in the Dreamtime by the Ancestor Alert - the Aboriginal name for the black-tailed wallaby that lives in the Australian desert - still celebrated at the sacred site of Entireba, where he left his creative mark.
