The Bu or ‘trumpet shell’ played an important role in the traditional life of the inhabitants of the Torres Strait. It was not only a source of food, but also an instrument that was blown like a trumpet to call the villagers together or to warn them of imminent danger.

The shell was dried and a hole drilled in its end. The sound produced depended on the size of the shell used, depending on the nature of the gathering.
