The "ganiny" is an instrument used to bark the trunks of certain eucalyptus trees found in this region, but it also has a religious value since it is used during funeral ceremonies and also refers to the myth of the primordial fire celebrated by the Yirritja men (one of the two groups making up the artist's ethnic group). As for the oblique lines (or rarrk), they evoke the ebb and flow of the waters on the shore of Elcho Island. Thus the initial subject is transformed into a stylised cartography of the various sacred territories of Elcho Island.
