Originally from Lajamanu, Aboriginal painter Peggy Rockman NAPALJARRI depicts here the cult of the budgerigar – a green and yellow sparrow to which Aboriginal women pay homage during ritual ceremonies. Here we can see the initiates (U shapes) who gather around the trees (concentric circles) where the birds nest, the crosses represent the paw prints of the budgerigars and the lines connecting the circles, their flights from tree to tree. In accordance with the tradition of ground painting, Aboriginal works are done flat: hence the predominance of "satellite" views in Aboriginal desert art.
