Originally from Yuendumu in the central Australian desert, Sabrina Granites' work evokes the Dream of Mina Mina, who belongs to the Napangardi and Napanangka women, two female clans in the Warlpiri group.
For the Aborigines, the "Dream of the Seven Sisters" corresponds to the seven stars of the Taurus constellation, also known as the "Pleiades". These seven stars personify seven ancestral sisters of the Napaljarri clan, often depicted in paintings as carrying a Jampijinpa man who is in love with them. But another individual from the Jakamarra group, Jukurra-Jukurra, symbolised by the Morning Star, is also in love with them and is usually depicted chasing them across the sky. To escape this man, the Seven Sisters transformed themselves into flames and ascended into the sky to become stars.
Like most artists from the Central Desert, Sabrina Granites uses the dot painting technique, inspired by the floor paintings traditionally produced for ritual ceremonies. This technique gives the work the appearance of a veritable mosaic, the vibratory effect of which gives the very idea of life and reminds us that for the Aborigines, the Dreamtime does not belong to the past but, as an eternal present whose permanence is ensured by art and religious rites, it is above all continuous creation and energy.
