Legend has it that in the Dreamtime - the mythical time of creation for the Aborigines - two rainmaker ancestors from the Jangala family called down rain with their songs, triggering an enormous storm. The storm moved along their clan territory with the thundering sound of lightning. It mixed with another storm and was seized by a brown hawk ancestor (kirrkarlanji) who let it fall on Purlungyanu, another sacred place where a very large marsh formed. When it reached Puyurru, the bird dug up Warnayarra - a giant Rainbow snake - from the ground. The snake carried water with it, giving rise to the lake of Jillyiumpa.
