This painting depicts the dream of the flying ant (Pamapardu Jukurrpa) from the Wartungurru region, west of Yuendumu. Pamapardu is the Warlpiri term for flying ants or termites, which build gigantic anthills in the Tanami region. The reason these ants can fly is to escape the flooding caused by the heavy summer rains that submerge the anthills. So they follow their queen to a dry place to settle in for the coming year, losing their wings once they have found a new home.
Contemporary Warlpiri iconography includes the use of sinuous lines that symbolise the riverbeds in satellite vision and the relief created by the piles of earth formed by the anthills. Aborigines come across them on their way to harvest, such as the one at Wapurtali, also known as Mount Singleton, shown in the centre of the canvas. This is a sacred place west of Yuendumu, sometimes associated with the dream of the Caterpillar.
