This ceramic is the result of a collaboration between Derek Thompson and Ngunytjima Carroll. Ngunytjima shapes the ceramic on which Derek draws, using the sgrafitto technique. A coloured slip is applied to a fired piece. Once the slip has dried, a pattern or design is engraved by exposing the clay beneath the slip. The decoration is formed by the difference in colour between the slip and the clay. This operation takes place before firing and vitrification. The transposition of his drawings of the landscape and animal life of Pukatja onto ceramics is quite unique. The motifs on this vase represent the formation of large salt lakes in the Northern Territory. The motifs on this vase represent the formation of large salt lakes near Curtin Springs in the Northern Territory.
