Joseph Jurra is painting about a legend linked to the Ngaminya waterhole, not far from Kiwirrkura, the community where he lives.
Legend has it that a group of female ancestors camped there to gather berries and cut edible tree roots.
All that remains of this story, whose many twists and turns are known only to the initiated, are these endlessly interlocking square shapes, symbolizing the now-sacred sites where the women stopped to celebrate ceremonies.
