Legend has it that an old man called Lungkarta (Blue-tongued Lizard) lived on a hill with his two sons. He pretended to be blind and sent the two boys to hunt for him. Meanwhile, he hunted himself and ate all the meat before his children returned.
One day, they returned with a kangaroo they had killed after a long hunt, but it was sacred. Mad with rage, the old man decided to punish them. One day when they went hunting, he set fire to the bush.
The huge fire that followed them made them run for miles, sometimes throwing them into the air, until a flame from the Blue Tongue Lizard's burrow got the better of them.
From time immemorial, Aborigines have deliberately set fire to the bush at the start of the dry season to regenerate nature and make the land more fertile.
