Jardin d'Hiver
12 January - 25 February 2023
The Winter Garden exhibition takes visitors on a dreamlike journey through a selection of framed works. Like windows opening onto the world, the works question our relationship with living things and their materiality. Works on paper, highlighting both the vibrancy and vulnerability of the region, resonate with each other.
The exhibition brings together Australian Aboriginal artists from the Central Desert and Arnhem Land, Torres Strait Islander artists and Western artists, all of whom share a common sensitivity to the environment, including Judy Watson Napangardi and Uni Martin Nampijinpa, who tell the story of a mysterious epic through the Dreaming Trails. Other works include the highly graphic work of G. W. Bot, which composes with the forms of nature, and the engraved poetry of Dennis Nona, whose etching is referenced in the collections of the Musée des Confluences in Lyon and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and which won him 1st prize in the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2008.
